Summary

New York Times bestseller! Artemis Fowl meets Men in Black in this exhilarating debut middle grade fantasy, the first in a trilogy filled with #blackgirlmagic。 Perfect for fans of Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky, the Percy Jackson series, and Nevermoor

Amari Peters has never stopped believing her missing brother, Quinton, is alive。 Not even when the police told her otherwise, or when she got in trouble for standing up to bullies who said he was gone for good。

So when she finds a ticking briefcase in his closet, containing a nomination for a summer tryout at the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs, she’s certain the secretive organization holds the key to locating Quinton—if only she can wrap her head around the idea of magicians, fairies, aliens, and other supernatural creatures all being real。

Now she must compete for a spot against kids who’ve known about magic their whole lives。 No matter how hard she tries, Amari can’t seem to escape their intense doubt and scrutiny—especially once her supernaturally enhanced talent is deemed “illegal。” With an evil magician threatening the supernatural world, and her own classmates thinking she’s an enemy, Amari has never felt more alone。 But if she doesn’t stick it out and pass the tryouts, she may never find out what happened to Quinton。

Amari Peters just wants to find her brother。 Quinton Peters was the favorite child of their local community, with perfect grades, involved in all the right clubs, and he even ran a local tutoring group for younger kids。 When he vanishes, the police don't seem to really care。 No one is looking hard enough。 Everyone is out of leads。。。until Amari discovers a briefcase left for her in her brother's closet。 The briefcase opens Amari's eyes to a magical world she never knew existed。 Amari's brother no Amari Peters just wants to find her brother。 Quinton Peters was the favorite child of their local community, with perfect grades, involved in all the right clubs, and he even ran a local tutoring group for younger kids。 When he vanishes, the police don't seem to really care。 No one is looking hard enough。 Everyone is out of leads。。。until Amari discovers a briefcase left for her in her brother's closet。 The briefcase opens Amari's eyes to a magical world she never knew existed。 Amari's brother nominated her for a special summer training program for the secret Bureau of Supernatural Affairs。 Amari is swept into a world filled with all kinds of amazing and incredible things, but she also knows that this place has to hold the secret of what happened to her brother。 So, in between getting to know her weredragon roommate (and best friend), studying for her training examines, and dodging the racist and classist remarks of the "legacy" kids whose rich families have always been a part of the supernatural crime fighting force, Amari does everything she can to find information about her brother's last case before he disappeared。 That isn't particularly easy when she is revealed to be a magician--an illegal type of supernatural being that is known for harming and killing Bureau agents--including Amari's own brother。 THIS BOOK THIS BOOK THIS BOOK! This is going to be my go-to fantasy series recommendation from now on。 The world building is fantastic, with so much here to explore that many series could easily be spun off of this one title。 The plot is fast-paced, giving the reader just enough time to get comfortable before moving on to the next twist--but not in a way that feels overwhelming or too unrealistic。 And of course there is Amari--spunky, cunning, sarcastic, amazing Amari。 Where is the sequel? The movie adaptation? Add this to your library, throw it at every child, and someone buy the film or TV rights to this series now because this is going to be big。 (This is going to get compared heavily to Harry Potter--as any magical school book does--but I think this book deserves better。 If you must compare it to something, Lockwood and Company has the fast-paced supernatural mystery and Rick Riordan's mythology worlds have the summer-experience and the talking inanimate objects。 But really--let this shine on its own。) 。。。more

I can see many years down the road a generation of kiddos get asked when they are grown, what book got you into reading, they will say Amari。 This has star power。

Well paced, with a likeable and fleshed out main character in Amari。 Reminded me a lot of Nevermoor, but in a more grounded setting。 Good handling of intense themes, like racism, bullying, and losing a family member。

Absolutely wonderful。 A Harry Potter type of school with kids with supernatural powers。 Amari has a very rare and distrusted ability - Magic。 She suffers discrimination, not only because of her ability, her coming from a low income home and she is black。 Without preaching, it shows the similarities of discrimination in her new setting and her past life。 Brilliantly written and teaches middle graders about the cost of bias on the one who is different。

。。。 DNF-ing this at 50%。 It is going on forever and the whiplash of Amari's characterisation is driving me crazy。 。。。 DNF-ing this at 50%。 It is going on forever and the whiplash of Amari's characterisation is driving me crazy。 。。。more

This is a really fun, page-turning middle-grade fantasy novel, featuring a black female protagonist who discovers a supernatural world hidden amid our own, as well as her power and place in it。 First and foremost, Amari has a great voice, and the plot is engaging and full of twists。 But when Amari is ostracized in her new world for something that makes her different, the novel draws not-so-subtle parallels to how racist attitudes in our world have affected Amari's life。 I found this "lesson" to This is a really fun, page-turning middle-grade fantasy novel, featuring a black female protagonist who discovers a supernatural world hidden amid our own, as well as her power and place in it。 First and foremost, Amari has a great voice, and the plot is engaging and full of twists。 But when Amari is ostracized in her new world for something that makes her different, the novel draws not-so-subtle parallels to how racist attitudes in our world have affected Amari's life。 I found this "lesson" to be delivered perfectly--explicitly enough that a reader cannot miss it and that it can be a topic for discussion, but in a way that doesn't "feel like a lesson" and instead more a way to convey Amari's emotions as part of the plot and character development。 This feels like a great first book of a series。 。。。more

NO。 WHAT。 NO。 I fell in love whit the charecters, not to talk about the name Amari。 It had me laugh, and get angry。 When i was hungry while reading, i took the book whit me (it didn’t end well), cause i couldn’t stop! There allways happend something new, and everyone is more deep than you think at first。 I can’t belive, that this is the author’s debut book。 I can only say, that my mind got THIS BOOK WAS AMARI-AMAZHING (😉)!!!! 。。。more

Amari and the Night Brothers is my favorite book of the year so far。 I can’t wait for the next book。 It reminds me of the excitement I would get waiting for the next Harry Potter book。This world and cast of characters is magical and addictive。 The book is fast paced and keeps you turning the next page。

3。5 stars I think it is hard to write a "supernatural" book about kids with powers who go away to a special school to learn how to use those powers without inevitably falling under the shadow of the Harry Potter series。 This had many similarities that felt made me feel like this had been done before and parallelled many plot points。 There were also some unique elements that definitely set the book apart and were interesting details。 The story had a real plot twist at the end that caught me total 3。5 stars I think it is hard to write a "supernatural" book about kids with powers who go away to a special school to learn how to use those powers without inevitably falling under the shadow of the Harry Potter series。 This had many similarities that felt made me feel like this had been done before and parallelled many plot points。 There were also some unique elements that definitely set the book apart and were interesting details。 The story had a real plot twist at the end that caught me totally off guard and surprised me which was fun。 I found myself a little lost sometimes with all the characters and storylines but I think for a child who loves this genre, this will be an engaging book and story。 。。。more
